The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) updated the list of Reference Specifications (ERs, in the Portuguese acronym) for phytosanitary products employed in organic agriculture. By following the sustainable and low impact provisions of an ER, crop protection products and other phytosanitary products can be prioritized for product registration.

Normative Instruction n. 109/2020 from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) enacted four new Reference Specifications (ERs, in the Portuguese acronym) for phytosanitary products applicable to organic agriculture and republished three. The list of ERs is available here (in Portuguese).

They represent product specifications for phytosanitary products, such as crop protection products, that are authorized for organic agriculture. Phytosanitary products that follow the disposition of an ER can not only be registered as authorized for organic agriculture, but have their registration process prioritized, since they adhere to sustainable and low risk product specifications.

The normative instruction republished the provisions for ERs n. 16, 25 and 27, including new biological targets or approved ingredients. It also issued ERs n. 44, 45, 46 and 47, targeting biological and microbiological agents.
